12 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer Before You Book

Your wedding photos are the one thing from the day that lasts a lifetime. Before you book a photographer, ask these questions. Good photographers will be happy to answer every one of them.

01Can we see full wedding galleries?

Instagram shows the best ten photos. A full gallery shows how a photographer handles a whole day: the rush of getting ready, low light at night and a crowded stage. Ask for one or two complete weddings, ideally at a venue like yours.

02How would you describe your style?

Candid, traditional, editorial or documentary? Most Indian weddings need a mix: natural candid moments plus the family group photos your parents will ask for. Make sure the balance matches what you want.

03Who will actually shoot our wedding?

Ask whether the photographer whose work you love will be there in person, or a team member. If it is a team, ask to see that person’s work too.

04How many photographers and videographers for each event?

A big baraat or a sangeet with hundreds of guests needs more than one camera. Ask how the team changes from small events, like the haldi, to the big ones.

05Which events and how many hours are covered?

List every function: roka, haldi, mehendi, sangeet, wedding, reception. Confirm which ones are included, how many hours each, and what happens if the pheras run late into the night.

Rituals move fast. Make sure every function you care about is on the list.

06What exactly will we receive?

Ask for specifics: roughly how many edited photos, whether you get a highlight film and a full-length video, and what size and type of album is included.

07When will we get our photos?

Ask for the delivery time for a first preview, the full gallery and the album. Wedding season is busy for every studio, so a clear timeline in writing avoids stress later.

08Do you give unedited (raw) files?

Many photographers do not, and that is normal. What matters is that you know the answer upfront and understand what “all photos” means in your package.

09Do you carry back-up equipment and keep back-ups?

Cameras fail and memory cards get lost. A professional carries spare bodies, lenses and batteries, and keeps more than one copy of your photos until they are delivered.

10Have you shot at our venue, and do you travel?

Someone who knows your venue knows where the light is good and where the stage lights are tricky. For destination weddings, ask what travel and stay costs are added.

11Is a pre-wedding shoot included?

A pre-wedding shoot is also the best way to get comfortable with your photographer before the big day. Ask if it is part of the package or a separate booking. Our guide to planning a pre-wedding shoot in Jaipur can help.

12What are the payment and cancellation terms?

Ask for the booking amount, when the rest is due and what happens if your date changes. Everything should be in a written agreement.
