9 Best Pre-Wedding Shoot Locations in Jaipur

Jaipur is one of the most photogenic cities in India for a pre-wedding shoot. Honey-coloured forts, a palace floating on a lake and a whole old city painted pink give you a different backdrop every few kilometres. Here are the places we love, with photos from our own shoots.

Every spot below works for a different mood: royal and grand, soft and romantic, or bright and playful. Most couples pick two or three locations for one day so there is time to change outfits and catch the best light.

01Amer Fort

If you only shoot at one place in Jaipur, make it Amer. The fort has everything: carved archways, mirror-work halls, latticed jharokhas and huge courtyards with the Aravalli hills behind. It suits rich lehengas and sherwanis as much as simple ivory outfits.

Best time: right at opening time, before the tour groups arrive. Good to know: Amer is a protected monument, so check the current entry, camera and shoot-permission rules before your date.

02Jal Mahal

Jal Mahal sits in the middle of Man Sagar Lake on the road to Amer. You shoot from the promenade, with the palace and the hills reflected in the water. At sunrise the lake turns soft gold and pink, and on misty winter mornings it looks like a painting.

Best time: sunrise. The promenade is quiet and the light is gentle on skin. Pair it with Amer Fort, which is just up the road.

03Hawa Mahal

The “Palace of Winds” is Jaipur’s most famous facade. By day its pink sandstone windows make a bright, colourful backdrop. After dark the facade is lit up, and the rooftop cafés across the road give you an eye-level view of it, perfect for sparklers and fairy-light frames.

Best time: early morning for the street view, or after sunset from a rooftop. The road in front is busy through the day.

04City Palace

The City Palace is still home to Jaipur’s royal family, and its Pritam Niwas Chowk has four painted gates for the four seasons. The Peacock Gate, with its blue and green peacocks, is one of the most loved backdrops in the city.

Good to know: photography rules inside the palace are strict, so confirm permissions in advance.

05Albert Hall Museum

Albert Hall in Ram Niwas Garden is an Indo-Saracenic building of domes and arches. It works beautifully in the soft morning light, when the plaza is calm and the pigeons gather, and again after dusk when the building is lit up.

06Nahargarh Fort

Nahargarh sits on the ridge above the city. Its walls and terraces give you wide views over Jaipur, and it is one of the best places in town for a sunset. Choose it if you want sky, wind and a sense of height in your pictures.

07Patrika Gate

Patrika Gate at Jawahar Circle is a newer landmark, but it is pure colour: every pillar and arch is hand-painted with scenes from Rajasthan. It suits bright, playful outfits and works well in the morning before the crowds.

08Panna Meena ka Kund

This old stepwell near Amer has criss-cross staircases on all four sides. The geometric steps make striking, symmetric frames, and it pairs naturally with a morning at Amer Fort. Check the current rules on access to the steps before you plan around it.

09Heritage hotels and havelis

If you want privacy, no crowds and full control over the timing, a heritage hotel or haveli is a great choice. Courtyards, old doors, jharokhas and gardens give you the royal Jaipur look without the public. This is also the best option for a shoot in the summer heat.

Our tipDo not try to cover everything in one day. Two or three locations that are close to each other, such as Jal Mahal at sunrise, then Amer Fort and Panna Meena ka Kund, give you more time in good light and far better photos than rushing across the city.
